An RSS reader is a program or a service that aggregates or consolidates RSS feeds from various sites and display them for you to read and use. Once you have selected a particular blog or "feed" to subscribe to, your RSS reader will check this blog or "feed" for regular updates and display them. This saves the user the hassle of checking a particular blog daily to check for updates.
RSS readers come in many formats. They can be an additional browser plugin which you install on your Internet Explorer or Firefox.
They can be an online service which you log into to check for your updates, such as Bloglines.com.
Portals like Yahoo and Google also provide an online RSS reader for their users.
RSS readers are also used interchangeably with terms such as feed readers, feed aggregators, news readers and search aggregators.
